Setting Up Your Child’s Vision For Today, Tomorrow, & Beyond

A lot can happen during your child’s development that it can be hard to know when to start caring for your child’s vision and eye health. Our optometrists recommend having your child’s first eye exam at the age of 6 months and then yearly thereafter. With our team’s help we will ease the stress of managing your child’s vision while making their appointments a breeze!

All you have to do is book an appointment for your child, and we can help with the rest!

Why Should Your Child Have Eye Exams?

Did you know that more than 80% of a child’s learning is based on their vision? Studies have shown that 1 in 4 school-age children have undetected vision problems that can lead to learning and behavioral issues. Make sure your child is reaching their full potential.

Eye exams provide so much more than just a lens prescription; they’re vital in detecting and responding to vision problems that could affect your child for the rest of their life! Many eye diseases and conditions can develop during your child’s early years, threatening their vision.

Some of these issues can include:

Some of these issues may develop asymptomatically, leading to permanent vision loss if they’re not discovered early enough. With our trained team and state-of-the-art technology, our eye exams can detect these issues and help your child manage them before they cause permanent damage.

What Can Your Child Expect From Their Appointment?

Initial Discussion

Before we start with the eye exam, your optometrist will have a quick conversation with you and your child regarding their health, family health, and eye health history. The point of this conversation is to ensure that your child’s medical information is accurate and up to date while also giving your optometrist the chance to tailor the exam to fit your child’s needs.

Please feel free to ask questions or address any concerns you or your child might have! Our team encourages patient involvement throughout the exam.

Once we’ve ensured that your child’s medical information is accurate and up to date, we’ll move on to the rest of the exam.

Visual acuity and strength testing will help us determine the lens prescription your child may need to achieve clear vision. There are many ways to perform these tests, but a few of the most common include Snellen eye charts and a phoropter. To test infants and toddlers that may not be verbal or know their alphabet, our eye doctors use pictures, lights, and other child-friendly ways that can make their visit to our office as fun as possible.

After determining your child’s prescription, we’ll then screen their eyes for signs of disease.

Eye health screenings are essential for preserving your child’s vision against eye diseases and conditions. Many eye diseases can develop asymptomatically, but eye exams can help detect them.

During this part of the exam, we’ll take a detailed look into your child’s eyes using special technology, including retinal imaging, tonometry, and more. Once we’ve assessed your child’s eyes, we can create a management plan to address any issues we find.

To wrap up the exam, your optometrist will have a conversation with you and your child about their findings and any medications, prescriptions, or treatments they might recommend.

How To Spot Your Child’s Vision Issues

Vision problems can happen at any age, but sometimes it can be hard for your child to notice these issues, especially if they’ve lived with them for several years. You may be able to spot these issues by observing your child’s behaviour, like:

  • Sitting close to the television to see
  • Holding objects up close or in awkward positions to see them
  • Skipping lines and words while reading
  • Difficulty maintaining focus at school or home
  • Excessive blinking or constant eye rubbing
  • Complaints of headaches, blurred vision, or double vision
  • Avoiding near work

If you’re noticing behaviour like this, we recommend booking an eye exam for your child.

How Myopia Affects Your Child

Myopia or nearsightedness is one of the most common refractive errors around the globe. So common that by 2050, researchers believe half of the world’s population may have myopia symptoms.

Myopia can occur in children as young as 6 and happens when the eye elongates over time. This elongation prevents light from reaching the retina, causing blurry distance vision. As your child grows, the eye can elongate further, progressing their symptoms. High myopia runs the risk of causing retinal damage and vision loss.

To help manage your child’s myopia progression, we offer Hoya MiyoSmart eyeglass lenses and MiSight 1-Day contact lenses that address this elongation and correct their refractive error.
