Diabetes May Damage Your Vision

Diabetes can affect many different aspects of your health, including your eyes. But you don’t need to let diabetes control your life. With our team’s help, you can manage the effect diabetes can have on your eyes and preserve your vision.

If you have diabetes, please book an eye exam with our team.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a systemic disease that affects how your body processes sugar, also known as glucose. Your pancreas produces insulin to help manage your glucose levels. Diabetes can slow down or even prevent the amount of insulin you need in your blood to maintain healthy glucose levels, leading to health issues in your heart, teeth, and eyes.

Nearly 2.3 million Canadians live with the disease, and many of them need to inject insulin manually to manage their blood sugar levels. Eye exams can help spot eye issues caused by diabetes, and any person with the disease should have annual eye exams to help preserve their vision.

Eye Health Issues Related to Diabetes

Diabetes can increase the risk of developing various eye diseases and conditions, including:

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood-sugar levels damage the blood vessels behind your retina. As a result, your retina starts to produce new, yet delicate, blood vessels to help get its nutrients. However, these vessels can break and leak fluid into your retina and macula, causing permanent vision loss.

Diabetic macular edema is an eye disease that can occur alongside diabetic retinopathy. When your blood vessels break, bulge, and leak due to diabetic retinopathy, it can swell your macula and cause central vision loss.

Diabetes can double the risk of developing open-angle glaucoma, one of the most common eye diseases worldwide.

Open-angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage angle between your cornea and iris remains open, but intraocular fluids aren’t draining fast enough from your eye to maintain stable intraocular eye pressure (IOP). As a result, your IOP levels rise and damage your optic nerve, leading to vision loss.

Cataracts are a common eye condition occurring when your clear crystalline lens becomes rigid and opaque, creating a milky, cloudy appearance that could affect your vision. Glasses and contact lenses can help correct vision errors caused by cataracts, but only cataract surgery can entirely remove the cataract.

Cataracts are up to 2-5 times more prevalent in people with diabetes.

Detecting Diabetes Symptoms

Retinal Imaging

Many eye diseases can be detected by observing your retina. We use the latest retinal imaging technology to monitor your retina and look for eye health issues related to diabetes, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, and more.

Your visual field refers to how wide of an area you can see while looking at a single object. Visual field tests help detect blind spots in your central and peripheral vision to determine the prevalence of diseases like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and others.
