Digital Eye Strain in South Surrey

Book Appointment

Are you suffering from digital eye strain?

We’re living in a world increasingly dependent on digital devices. On top of this, many industries are starting to realize the potential of going online, and employees are working their jobs from home.

But if you spend day after day staring at computer and phone screens, you may start to feel your eyes straining while using these devices. If this sounds familiar to you, you may be experiencing digital eye strain.

Let us find the relief options you need to get back to your digital devices without the eyestrain. Please, book your appointment today!

Breaking Down Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain is, despite what the name suggests, a sensation you may experience when focusing on an up-close object for a long time. As you focus, your eyes tend to blink less, destabilizing your tear film and leading to a range of symptoms, including

  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Wateriness
  • Dryness
  • Eye fatigue
  • Headaches

Digital devices aren’t the only source of these symptoms, as you can experience them while reading, writing, or during any other up-close activity.

What Are Blue Light Lenses & What Do They Do?

There has been a lot of talk in the last few years regarding blue light lenses. Blue light lenses are known for blocking blue light from digital screens to manage the effects of digital eye strain. Research is still being done to determine the long term effects of blue light emission on our eyes.

The largest provider of blue light isn’t our digital screens; it’s the sun. Your brain interprets blue light as a signal to be awake and active. In some studies, researchers have discovered that using a digital device before going to bed can disrupt your circadian rhythm, keeping you up longer at night.

How You Can Manage Digital Eye Strain

Computer Lenses

If you need help alleviating digital eye strain while working on a computer, we can provide you with computer lenses matched to your specific prescription. These customized digital lenses allow your eye muscles to relax and focus more easily, relieving eye strain, and providing visual comfort. We offer premium anti-glare and blue light blocking coatings on all of our lenses.

The 20/20/20 rule is a common exercise you can use to help manage your digital eye strain symptoms. After 20 minutes of work, spend 20 seconds looking at something about 20 metres away.

This gives your eyes some time to blink normally and reinforce your tear film with the ingredients it needs to stay comfortable.

Eye drops are one of the most common ways of dealing with any eye discomfort. However, be sure to speak to our eye care team before using any over-the-counter products to ensure you’re using them safely.

Another way to manage digital eye strain is to adjust your workplace ergonomics. Some quick tips include:

  • Adjusting your screen brightness to match the brightness of the room you’re in
  • Angling your screen to prevent glare from light sources
  • Positioning your screen at arm’s length and about 20 degrees below your eye level
